Cold January, Warm Heart

I have had an outstanding month so far!  I feel hope and gratitude, and I'd like to share with you some of the experiences I've had in January.

We, OneLove, had our first residency show at the Heartland Bar last Thursday with openers Cider Provider and Ace Da Vinci.  It was an intense opening to a monthly event that is strengthening relationships and community around a vision of a world united against oppression.

On the 12th, OneLove played a sold-out show at Uncommon Ground with me and Lin Boyle opening.  I'm feeling so full of opportunities to share my music.  I was joined on my set by my friend Bernard Runo on violin.  He and I are playing in a quartet that will be performing with Belleisle at the "Hungry Brain" in February.

Cider Provider also released a new album, "YEAH!", In which I am playing on a few tracks.  Check it out!  I'm playing violin on tracks 1, 3, and 8.  Listen to the whole thing; it's poignantly playful.

Despite #45 and everything that comes with him, I hope this message finds you filled with the kind of hope that motivates you.  Whether that be at a rally, helping the homeless folks living in your neighborhood, or supporting black-owned businesses, please take action.  Sometimes I feel halted by fear of imperfection; today I'm focusing on doing the next right thing even if I'm present in a clumsy way.

Option 1:  Continue working on rap or song

Needs to be 16 bars, have a rhyming scheme, be appropriate for school, not negative, be original.  If you have finished your 16 bars then you can begin to write a chorus.  You are working alone unless last week you asked for a received permission ahead of time to work with another person.  Your voices need to be off so that people who are doing option 2 today can hear what they need to hear.  Thank you.

Option 2:  Watch and learn about Stax records based in Memphis, TN.  Take notes and summarize what you learn.  Mention important names and what they achieved.

Rap Song Assignment

You will be writing your own rap.

A written copy of your song must be handed in at the end of the assignment.

Students that complete the assignment according to guidelines will have the opportunity to record their rap with Sensei and get an MP3 of the final product.

The lyrics and content must be appropriate for school.

The rap can not be negative or demeaning.

This must be an original song, you may not borrow lyrics from an existing piece of work.

This will be a 16 bar rap

You need to have a rhyming scheme.  AA BB, ABAB, or you can have words in the middle that rhyme.

Bonus:  You can write a chorus (repeated section) for your rap.

Have fun!
